About Indeterminate Causality

Indeterminate Causality is a collection of some of my comics, doodles, and sketches. It's a commentary on life, situations we all find ourselves in, the world of medicine, being a guy, and interpersonal interactions, with a slant towards making scenarios as amusing as possible. Updated Monday-Wednesday-Friday (I try, sometimes its difficult with school/exams and such).

Replace It

193 Replace It

No, seriously, use colon. Why? Normal colonic mucosa is columnar, and when constantly stimulated by stomach acid, will undergo metaplasia. And what does it turn into? Squamous epithelium, which is exactly what we want there.

Also, I was considering getting a Masters in Public Health, and maybe a Ph.D in nanotech too. You can never have enough education!

Empathy

191 Empathy

You know, some people are pathological empathetics; they are abnormally incapable of showing empathy.

Note: Names have been changed to protect the annoying. If one of the above names is yours and you are a gunner that is purely coincidental. However, if you know me, and are a gunner, and don't see your name...well then you know what it was changed from.

Drug Names

Now these endings are very generalized, there are many that don't fit the rules. What we really need a standardized logical system of drug naming.

Here have this salad and tell me how you feel. No you can't have dressing on the side in this case

ARBs - Angiotensin Receptor Blockers, which are similar to Angiotensin Converting Enzyme Inhibitors or ACE Inhibitors, but without the bradykinin-induced dry cough. Pirates like ARBs because they don't have time to be coughing whilst pillaging.

Comics Are [almost] Back!

Just a heads up, new comics will start being posted again next week! I take my boards shortly and will then have some time to do some drawing. Not sure if any of you missed these, but I sure did. Monday the 25th should have a new comic!

In the mean time, if you all could send some good karma my way I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks,

-Tommy

PS. If you haven't seen it already, and want to be notified of new comics via Facebook, I have a Facebook page here

Updates

Hey all,

I've been really busy studying for boards lately, and haven't had time to do much [any] drawing. Sorry about that, but unfortunately school comes first. I will attempt to get some comics up when I can, but will probably not get many up before the middle of June, when I should get back to the normal 3x/week schedule. I'll get back here when I can!

Wish me luck on boards!

No-Brainer

184 No Brainer

I mean, you could also view pregnancy as a couple's issue, in which case being female is irrelevant. The point is, make sure your patients realize that sex may equal babies.

I'm sorry about that. When you get to be residents don't be like that guy that was on the phone, people will hate you.

If you win at Professor Bingo, you MUST ask a question. If you win a lot, you become that student that the professor knows by name. Play this game wisely.

Social Interaction

179 Social Interaction

I can't believe we have to sit through a lecture entitled "Empathy is Necessary in Medicine. If You Don't Have It, Learn To Fake It."
That must be frustrating for you to have to sit through. Please tell me more about it.

177 Correct Course of Action

Turns out that test answers can actually be correct in real life, too. Who'd have thought that would happen? My mind is blown.

Obnoxious Patients

176 Obnoxious Patients

Obviously you cannot do that these days, but back when I was a resident, that's sometimes what happened.  Barbaric practices, I say. But then again I said that you can fix behavior with Haldol. Confusing, huh?

Edema

175 Edema

Excess fluid doesn't get invited to parties. It's depressed about this, and sinks pretty low.

Anatomy of a MS-II

174 Anatomy of a MS-II

Yea, it's much like the Anatomy of a MS-I, but much more haggard, and worried looking. Also, MS-II is obviously more conflicted about the end of the school year as 1. The year is ending, and 2. Boards are looming.

Difficult Patients

173 Difficult Patients

This is best if you say it in iambic pentameter, but as I'm a doctor and not a poet, I'm pretty sure that the timing or syllables are off somehow. Whatever. You get the point.

Medical Jargon

169 Medical Jargon

Actually, it could also just be that it's really simple and we want to make it seem more complex. You don't know what caput medusae is? It's quite simple to understand, if you speak Latin and know Greek mythology.

Windows

If there were windows, you'd have to recover from your injuries in the hospital before taking your boards, leaving you less time to study, and thus making your chances of passing much lower.
